Houses
This category is here for historical reference only. Working as a finish carpenter I got interested in, and decided to try my hand at, designing and building houses.
Newell St.
A four bedroom, 2-1/2 bath, 1,836 square foot house I designed and built (literally) at 811 Newell St. Bellingham, WA. I did the design, foundation, framing, siding, painting, tile, interior trim and cabinets/closets.
This was a custom spec house which means I designed it specifically for the lot it is on. I tried to make the best use of southern exposure by putting the house in the northwest corner of the lot. This resulted in a large side yard to the south. I chose alley access to maintain as much yard as possible. Instead of mostly driveway on the front of the house it is all yard with street parking and a walk to the main entry. I designed the living space to be as open, south facing and as full of natural light as possible. The bathrooms and stairwell were placed on the north side of the house. There are large skylights to light the stairwell, main bath and the hallway upstairs. The kitchen had to go on the north side so I gave the family room an extra large patio door to add light in the kitchen.
The look of the house is traditional with a number of craftsman style details. I put most of the detailing on the front of the house and have carried it through on the inside woodwork. Concerns were maintaining affordability yet making it visually appealing.
Exterior details include a belly band, scalloped siding on all gable ends, wide corner boards, special window trim for the gridded windows, custom crown moulding and a barrel vault over the master deck.
Interior details include traditional four panel doors and craftsman style painted woodwork along with a lot of tile. There is a lot of custom detailing. The doors and window wraps have a traditional bead and crown headpiece, all stools are a full inch thick and the baseboard is a more substantial 3 1/4" high.
